What’s gone wrong?

Finding the fault starts with the symptom

After more than 20 years repairing vacuum cleaners, we know that two machines showing the same symptom can have completely different faults.

An AirRam that won’t switch on might have a switch, battery, charging or electrical problem. If it’s running but not picking up properly, the cause could be restricted airflow, dirty filters, a blockage or something affecting the brush roll.

Handles, wheels and other moving components can also become worn or damaged through everyday use.

You don’t need to work out what has failed before contacting us. Tell us what your Gtech is doing and we’ll investigate the cause.

A common Gtech AirRam problem

A wheel has come off — is it just the wheel?

At first it can look like a simple repair. A wheel has fallen off, so fitting another one seems like the obvious answer.

The problem is that sometimes it isn’t the wheel that has failed. The mounting it attaches to can become damaged too, and in some cases that means another wheel simply cannot be fitted.

On other AirRams, the damage can still be repaired. Models such as the AR29 and AR30 can develop wheel problems, but we need to see what has actually broken before saying whether a repair is practical.

If it can be repaired sensibly, we’ll explain the options. If it can’t, we’ll tell you.

Battery & charging

Won’t charge? The battery isn’t always the answer

When an AirRam stops charging or refuses to switch on, it’s understandable to think the battery has reached the end of its life.

Sometimes a replacement battery is exactly what the machine needs. But charging, switch and electrical problems can produce similar symptoms, which is why we prefer to check the Gtech rather than replace a battery based on a guess.

If the battery does need replacing, we’ll explain what’s required and quote for it before fitting it.

Pick-up & performance

It’s running — but it’s not picking up properly

Some AirRams don’t suddenly stop working. Instead, you notice they’re leaving more behind and you’re going over the same part of the carpet more than once.

Hair and fibres around the brush roll, restricted filters and blockages can all affect how well the machine picks up. If the brush roll itself has stopped turning, we’ll investigate what is preventing it from working.

Rather than assuming an expensive component has failed, we find the cause first and repair what actually needs attention.

Repair or replace?

Can a Gtech AirRam be repaired?

Yes — many Gtech AirRam faults can be repaired, so a problem doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time for a new vacuum.

A faulty switch, charging problem, damaged component or other repairable fault may have a straightforward solution.

But there are also occasions when the cost of repairing an older or badly damaged machine simply doesn’t make sense. Finding the fault matters, but so does deciding whether the repair is worth doing.

“If there’s a sensible repair, we’ll explain it. If we think you’d be better putting the money towards another vacuum, we’ll tell you that too.”
